The losing candidates in the first round of the second phase of elections to the People’s Assembly in Sohag demonstrated with an approximate number of 2000 of their advocates in front of the Court Complex headquarters in Sohag. The demonstration protested the elections results in the second constituency.

The demonstrators called for suspending the run-off round scheduled on December 21 and 22.

Ayman al-Shandawili, a losing candidate, said the protesters were staging an open sit-in in front of the Courts Complex “until the elections that have witnessed blatant rigging are suspended.”

Al-Shandawili was quoted as saying that the Elections Observation Committee in the city did not count the ballots of two ballot boxes. The constituency also witnessed rigging and illegal write-in ballots that were circulated.

The High Judicial Elections Commission declared yesterday the results of the first round of the second phase elections to the People’s Assembly.

The following candidates will be running the run-off round in Sohag: Khalid Muhammad Salilh Ibrahim, candidate for the farmers’ seat; Adlan Mahmoud Ahmad Musri, candidate for the farmers’ seat; Muhammad Muhammad Abd al-Rahman al-Sayyid, candidate for the brackets’ seat and Afifi Hafez Sabra Ali, candidate for the workers’ seat.
