CAIRO, Nov 25 (Aswat Masriya) – An administrative court in Cairo revoked on Tuesday a decision by the minister of justice ordering the confiscation of the assets of nine schools and firms allegedly affiliated with Egypt's banned Muslim Brotherhood.
An urgent matters court ordered the confiscation of the Muslim Brotherhood’s capital and dissolving any organisations affiliated with it in September 2013.
School representatives nevertheless argued that the schools are not affiliated with the Brotherhood and therefore do not fall under the court order's mandate.
The schools are owned by businessmen who belong to the Muslim Brotherhood.
A judicial source told Aswat Masriya that an overall of 90 schools nationwide have been confiscated under the pretext of their affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood.
The committee established to assess the funds of the Brotherhood, as per the September court ruling, has confiscated the assets of over 784 group members. It has also seized the organisation’s headquarters nationwide, as well as the headquarters of its Freedom and Justice Party, and 87 schools affiliated with the group.
Egypt listed the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation last December and insists it is behind the stringent wave of militancy which has targeted security personnel since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July last year. The Brotherhood continuously denies the accusations, distancing itself from one militant attack after the other.
