Egypt’s general prosecution said on Sunday that destructive acts that took place on Saturday in Cairo and other governorates do not fall under peaceful demonstration and are punishable by law.
Violent confrontations that broke out on Saturday in demonstrations to mark the anniversary of the 'April 6’ movement left over 40 people injured across the country.
In a statement, the prosecution condemned the vandalism and attacks on the high court, praising the role of the police in exerting their utmost efforts to protect state institutions.
It called on news outlets to uphold their commitment to impartiality and objectivity and not confuse rioters who vandalize and cut off roads with peaceful protesters.
"These are outlaws who should be arrested and punished," the statement said, adding that labeling rioters as protesters only encourages them to commit more crimes.
