CAIRO, Apr 12 (Aswat Masriya) – A Cairo court cancelled on Tuesday the precautionary measures placed on student and amateur photographer Israa al-Taweel, who was imprisoned for seven months and released last December.

Al-Taweel is hence no longer under police surveillance. 

Taweel was accused of "belonging to a terrorist organisation" and calling for disrupting laws, preventing state institutions from operating, and "harming national unity" by spreading false news.

She was arrested on June 1, 2015 and was denied proper care for a debilitating bullet wound that she ironically acquired while covering protests commemorating the third anniversary of the January 2011 uprising. As part of her recovery, she has had to use a wheelchair for months.

The court released Israa last December due to her medical condition. The judge presiding over the case ordered her to be put under house arrest and to remain under police surveillance.

Last January, the court reduced the security measures on Taweel and lifted the house arrest order, though she was still expected to visit Boulaq police station once a week, said Amnesty USA in a report then.
