CAIRO, Jul 8 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt’s environment ministry formed an operation room to monitor the movements of an “endangered” species of whale found in the waters of Egypt’s North coast, state’s TV reported on Friday.
Videos featuring the whale in the waters of the upscale resort of Marina on Egypt's north coast circulated social media networks over the past few days.
The North coast is one of Egyptians’ main holiday destinations during the summer.
The ministry is working on helping the whale leave the shallow area of the sea to return to its natural habitat, in deep offshore waters.
After analysing the videos featuring the whale, the ministry identified the species of whale which is known as Fin Whale.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed the Fin Whale as “endangered” species.
All whale species that occur in the Mediterranean generally and in Egyptian waters specifically “do not pose any danger to humans”, said the ministry.
