CAIRO, Sept. 7 (Aswat Masriya) - At least five people were killed, and 25 others injured in a train accident in al-Ayyat in Giza on Wednesday, al-Ahram reported.

The train, which was on its way from Assiut to Cairo, had derailed leaving three of its cars overturned, according to the head of the railway authority Medhat Shousha.

The minister of transport said on Wednesday that the families of the victims will be given EGP 20,000 ($2227) in compensation for the train accident.

This comes shortly after over 20 people were killed in a crash between a bus and a pick-up truck in the Wadi al-Jadid governorate in the early hours of Wednesday, according to the Health Ministry.

Egypt's Interior Minister said last month that there is a need to address road accidents with "unconventional" solutions, and to combat traffic problems within a legal framework.

Earlier this year, six people were killed when a train collided into a pick-up truck carrying workers at a railway crossing also in Ayyat in January.

In 2012, 52 school children were also killed when a train crashed into their school bus at a crossing in Assiut.

Egypt is among the countries with the highest rates of road accidents in the world. According to official statistics, the economic cost of traffic accidents in 2015 was estimated at EGP 30.2 billion with the number of accidents reaching 14,500.
