CAIRO, Jan 31 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi handed over the leadership of the committee of African leaders on climate change to Gabon’s President at the African Union Summit in the Ethiopian Capital on Tuesday.

Gabon President Ali Bongo will head the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change for the upcoming two years.

President Sisi presented a report of Egypt’s efforts on both the regional and international levels over the past two years with regards to climate change, state-owned MENA reported.  

According to the report, Egypt’s term featured an initiative to collect funds to help African states adapt to the requirements of facing climate change and another initiative aimed to increase the African states’ dependency on the green economy.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) defines a green economy as "one whose growth in income and employment is driven by public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services."

Sisi arrived to Addis Ababa Sunday night to attend the 28th African Union Summit which officially began on Monday at the level of Heads of States.

During their 28th ordinary session, President of the Republic of Guinea Alpha Conde was elected the new chairperson of the African Union (AU).
