Egyptian taxi drivers staged a six-hour sit-in on Monday during which they blocked traffic on Cairo's 6 October Bridge to demand that their car-payment instalments be cancelled.

The sit-in finally ended following negotiations with security forces, which intervened to open the bridge to traffic. No violence erupted.

Egypt has seen numerous strikes and sit-ins the two years since the 25 January 2011 revolution that topple former president Hosni Mubarak.

Last month, numerous Egyptian police officers went on strike to protest what they claimed were bad working conditions and the high risk involved in carrying out police duties.

On Sunday, Alexandria's Borg Al-Arab International Airport – Egypt's second largest airport – sustained significant damage at the hands of scores of low-ranking policemen who were demanding salary increases.
